I was born in Ayrshire, Scotland. I lived there with my Mum, Dad, sister and two brothers. I come from a large family of Glasgow Rangers football fans, which relates back to my granddad who played for them. I however, support Celtic, who happen to be the Rangers’ rivals, so you can imagine the stick I get from family members! I’ve supported Celtic from the age of 10. This is because I first witnessed Kenny Dalglish score four goals against my home town club, Ayr United, and from that day I’ve followed Celtic… and Kenny Dalglish. As a true supporter of Kenny, I even followed him when he started his career with Liverpool, and was there when he scored the winning goal in the European Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
At the age of 12 we all moved to a small village in Doncaster, South Yorkshire called Edlington, so my dad could continue his career in the mining industry.
I grew up listening to bands such as Madness and other Ska bands. I then got into a band called Simple Minds who I became a very big fan of. It wasn’t until my best mate, who’s now my brother in law, Mark, showed me a video of U2 – Under A Blood Red Sky, that I became captivated by their energy and the sound of their music, especially Adam Clayton’s bass playing. From that moment I was hooked and knew I wanted to be in a tribute band to U2. My best mate Mark bought a guitar and I bought my first bass, a Gibson copy. We would both sit for hours trying to learn song from U2 albums.
I had my first lesson with a friend, Ian Gibson (who I think is a Paul McCartney look-a-like) and a fantastic bass player! Through teaching me the basic notes I was able to learn my first two songs; New Years Day and I Will Follow. A few years later Mark and I found ourselves playing in various club bands together. We played varied music and the odd U2 track, but it wasn’t for me – I needed something more!
I soon go the chance of a lifetime, when a man called Mr Luke Pepper (The Edge) was advertising for an Adam-a-like for his U2 tribute band. I went along for an audition where I met Luke and Dean, who played drums. By that time I could play around 20 U2 tracks, I got the part! During the rehearsals we came up with a set list and practiced them for weeks. By this time my brother Gary was also in the band and played Bono, the lead singer – the man himself!
We soon started playing at local venues and gradually moved to playing all over England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
In 1995 whilst in a relationship, I moved up to Manchester. In 1995 my daughter Lauren Amy Kean was born; my little princess. She is now 11 years old, and was born to U2’s famous song, Pride In The Name Of Love. In 2005 I moved back to Doncaster to be closer to my family after the breakup of my marriage. In 2006 I met my beautiful fiancée, Shellie and on the 13 October 2008, our special little boy Logan Alex Kean was born weighing 6lb, 13oz. He’s now 9 months old and never stops smiling when I play U2 songs for him. He’s a little star and was also born to a U2 track – Beautiful Day.
I’ve played many years in this U2 tribute band at many different places. To name a few; Sheffield Arena, Don Valley Stadium, The Point, Dublin, The Olympia Theatre, Dublin, Stars In Their Eyes, Battle of the Fantasy Bands and numerous TV and radio programmes. Also, during the Pop Mart tour, myself and Luke were accidently shown into U2’s dressing room by a very embarrassed member of U2’s security team, who mistook us for The Edge and Adam! During that period we got to play alongside the fantastic four at Holland’s Feyenoord Stadium, and Bono said to me that “I was Adam’s long lost brother”. I was star struck to say the least.
During their sound check, they played the song ‘One’, live for the Top Of The Pops, which we got to watch in the stadium privately. I’ve got the Albums, CDs, Videos, and DVDs of the greatest band to have ever graced this planet!
I’ve been to about 40 live shows from Live Aid to the Joshua Tree tour, right up to the Vertigo tour, so to say I’m a fan is an understatement! I am inspired by Adam Clayton and the power and energy created by his Bass riffs. In my opinion he is the coolest man in rock and roll.
I have a Fender precision bass and a Fender Jazz bass. I use an Ashdown Combo for smaller venues and I use my bigger rig Ashdown (Mag system) which consists of two separate cabs and a 600 Ashdown head for the bigger shows. If you’re going to play Adam Clayton successfully you need to be using similar gear to the man himself.
One day I hope to make my kids very proud of me by being in the best U2 tribute band (ever!) and give them everything I never had!
Lastly, I've never played for any other U2 tribute band, even though my image and biography is being used without my consent.
Hope to see you all at a gig near you…
Achtung ya’ll.
Thanks, Steve
p.s. I believe it, Bono said it, and that’s that.
